Today we will go through a few tips to improve writing skills on Medium
Our blogging skills will change forever
Delete the word “that.”
noticed that nearly 80% of the times I use the word ‘that’ can be removed from my writings, making the sentences stronger.
Example: “You assume that I don’t care, but I do.” becomes “You assume I don’t care, but I do.”
Delete the words “I think.”
It adds nothing. Remove it to strengthen your point.
Example: “I think this is an important topic.” becomes “This is an important topic.”
Avoid words that end in “-ing.”
In most cases, the “-ing” softens your word and adds no value. Your writing will read better if you avoid it.
Example: “The results we’re expecting end up being mediocre and somewhat unsatisfactory.” becomes “The results we expect end up mediocre and somewhat unsatisfactory.”
Short sentences. Short paragraphs.
Most sentences can be broken down into multiple lines.
Try to divide each idea into one line, or at most three ideas. Writing concisely will make the reading experience more comfortable for the reader.
White space is your reader’s friend.
Shrink your opening sentence.
Make it compelling, but keep it short and conversational.
Example: “This guide is designed to enhance your writing abilities.” becomes “I can help you.”
However, the above tips can’t make my writing more engaging if it lacks emotion.
It is a story of personal experience. If you have personal experiences, storytelling will be effective, and you won’t need the above tips.
